CIENFUEGOS, January 16 (Alina Gonzalo, Cuba-Verdad) – A police
section-chief beat up a mentally-ill woman who didn't pay for her meal at a
local restaurant January 7.
María del Carmen Rodríguez Alvarado, 32, who neighbors say has
a long history of psychiatric disorders, walked into a restaurant in Amarillas,
ordered what was on the menu, ate it and didn't pay. Police section-chief
Ernesto Sotolongo showed up and beat Rodríguez, who later exhibited signs
of the beating around the head and face. Rodríguez was then arrested and
has been held at the Calimete municipal police station.
Orlando Rodríguez, who said he had witnessed the incident, added that
the woman had not eaten in two days.
