MIAMI, United States. – Matanzas reported this Wednesday 1,327 COVID-19 cases, the largest number of contagions registered by any Cuban province since the start of the pandemic.
According to the official report from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP, by its Spanish acronym), all thirteen of the country’s provinces confirmed positive cases of the virus: Matanzas (337); Colón (276); Cárdenas (230), Jagüey Grande (139); Martí (119); Calimete (89); Perico (40); Los Arabos (38); Jovellanos (33); Pedro Betancourt (16); Limonar (5); Unión de Reyes (4) and Ciénaga de Zapata (1).
Six patients died on Wednesday, including a two-month-old baby. The victims –between 56 and 67 years old- lived in Matanzas (2), Cárdenas (2) and Los Arabos (1). Four of the six patients suffered from hypertension.
The province also reported 27 imported cases, 26 of them in the Cárdenas municipality, which is where the Varadero tourist destination is located. One case was reported in Pedro Betancourt.
Dr. Francisco Durán García, national director of Epidemiology at MINSAP, indicated that Matanzas “faces the most complex situation in Cuba” in dealing with the pandemic.
Cuba confirmed this Wednesday 3,819 COVID-19 cases and 26 deaths from coronavirus-related complications, for a national total of 218,396 contagions and 1,431 deaths.
At end of day yesterday, 44,970 patients were hospitalized under clinical-epidemiological observation: 15,310 suspect cases, 8,569 being monitored, and 21,091 confirmed (active cases).
Of the 21,091 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 20,918 are in stable condition.
MINSAP’s press release further indicates that there are 173 confirmed cases in intensive therapy; of those, 101 are in serious condition, and 72 in critical condition.
There were 3,584 patients discharged, which raises the number of recoveries to 195,818 since March 2020.
