CAMAGÜEY, May 20 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) -
Independent Cuban journalist Mirlei Delgado, 32, says she regularly receives
anonymous death threats, which she interprets as attempts by government
operatives to dissuade her from practicing journalism.
She files her stories with the Free Press Agency (Agencia de Prensa Libre
Avileña) in Ciego de Ávila.
Delgado earns a living as a nurse in a medical office in the central Cuban
city of Ciego de Ávila, where last week she said she received a rag doll
with a shot drawn in the forehead and a note that said "You'll soon be like
this."
"In addition, two political police officers who say their names are
Fernando and Meriño have threatened to jail me," Delgado said.
She has also been threatened with losing her job if she doesn't quit working
as a journalist independent of government control.
Official harassment against Delgado has increased in intensity since March
4, when the local Department of State Security jailed eight anti-government
activists and two independent journalists, one of them the director of the press
agency Delgado works with.
