Independent journalist Carlos Brizuela smuggled a report from the provincial
prison in Holguin, where he is jailed, saying that fellow prisoners are
subjected to cruel treatment by guards.
"Prisoner Andrés Ricardo Aguilera suffers from severe back pain
but does not receive any medical treatment, even though he has repeatedly made
requests," Brizuela reported. He said Aguilera fainted April 29 and guards
named Armando and Rosendo said he could die for all they cared.
Brizuela's report, dated April 30, said political prisoners Rafael Jorrín
García and Lázaro Alejandro Farah García were victims of
psychological mistreatment by a state security official named Marrero. "Farah
García is being held in a cell with common prisoners who have attacked
him on many occasions on orders from agents of the political police,"
Brizuela said.
Brizuela, 29, was seized March 4 along with colleague Lexter Téllez
Castro, director of the Agencia de Prensa Libre Avileña, when they were
covering a protest by activists in Ciego de Avila.
