HAVANA, March 15 (Moisés Leonardo Rodríguez Valdés,
Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - Retired worker Luis Olivera, 69, died of "multiple
organ failure" February 8 in the Pinar del Río provincial hospital.
His family says Olivera died as a result of multiple trauma inflicted by an
industrial accident in a Bahía Honda sugar mill, just outside of Havana.
Authorities, however, have not classified his death as labor-related, which
means that his widow's pension will be much smaller than it should be.
One of Olivera's sons says he worked under contract at the sugar mill, and
was standing near a high-temperature water-return tank when it exploded. The
explosion damaged a nearby house and caused burns to two children, aged 9 and
12, inside.
Olivera was extricated from the tank's debris, suffering from burns and a
broken leg. These injuries, relatives say, led to his demise.
Another son says that his father's death has not been classified
administratively as a labor accident, which cuts down substantially his widow's
benefits.
