PINAR DEL RIO, July 12 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Residents of Minas, a small town about 45 miles from the
provincial capital of Pinar del Río, were stupefied recently when they
learned a construction brigade from the town had been sent to Havana to perform
repairs in the capitals water works similar to those sorely needed in the
town.
Minas and neighboring Santa Lucía have had problems with their water
supply for decades, due to the deterioration of the aqueduct. Local government
has offered little relief, and whenever work has been started, it has been
interrupted for lack of resources.
The local brigade was outfitted with modern equipment and plenty of
supplies, said Juan Morejón Valdés, the brigades foreman.
At present, there are streets in Minas that are useless as a result of work
that was started and not completed, to the extent that residents have been
injured falling in the ditches that have never been filled after being dug.
