HAVANA, July 10 (Ana Rosa Veitía, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) -
German cockroaches, which are called American cockroaches here, are thriving in
several Havana neighborhoods.
Most residents we talked to agreed that the first step in controlling them
should be the pick-up of waste accumulating in street corners. But, they each
have their own war stories:
Teresa, a resident of Old Havana, said: "The first thing is to take out
the bunkers built by the government for the American attack, because the roaches
multiply inside them."
Gonzalo León, who lives in Centro Habana, said: "Ill buy
any product with a label that says it kills cockroaches. This is unbearable.
They will go anywhere. Yesterday, in the M-6 bus, a woman suddenly yelled: Wow,
an American when she saw one in the bus."
Serafín Almanza, who works in a vegetarian restaurant, said: "This
restaurant has only been open a few months and they are already thriving; they
are happy here."
A teacher in Los Sitios neighborhood, Bertha, said: "These cockroaches
are a hoot! They eat and eat, and nothing kills them. When they invade your
house or workplace, they are worse than the bedbugs in the mattress."
A resident of Centro Habana said: "They say that to eliminate the
cockroaches you have to train in the United States. Im thinking of going
there. For that they wont have to take us out of our workplaces, because
there are thousands of volunteers ready to fulfill our Revolutionary duty."
