Tuberculosis cases up to 18 in Cuban prison

CIEGO DE ÁVILA, July 9 (Marialis Díaz, APLA / www.cubanet.org) - Two new cases of tuberculosis in the Canaleta prison in Ciego de Ávila province bring the total up to 18, according to a report smuggled out recently.

"Most of the patients are in the first phase of the disease," reads the clandestine note from the prison. "All infected prisoners are being held in cells adjacent to the exercise yard."

The report added that prison officials have said they can’t control the disease because they don’t have the funds available to improve the inmates’ living conditions.
