HAVANA, July 1 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - False
100 peso bills are circulating in Havana, said several city residents.
A woman who didnt want to reveal her identity said: "At first
glance, the only difference is the seal on one of the sides, which is not
totally sharp in the false bills."
The seal in question has a picture of Celia Sánchez, a former
personal secretary of Fidel Castro and one of the original participants in his
revolution.
Another woman, who also did not give her name, said she received one of the
false bills when she changed a five dollar bill in a farmers market. (Five
dollars is 130 pesos at the current exchange rate.)
"As soon as I got the bill, I noticed it was false. Automatically, the
man exchanged it for 20 peso bills," she said.
Other residents have said they are reluctant to take 100 peso bills for fear
of getting stuck with a bad one.
The official news media have not mentioned the existence of the false bills.
