HAVANA, January 25 (Luis Viño Zímerman, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - José Luis Reyneri, 50, the manager of the "El
Torete" butcher shop in East Havana, was fired after part of a 4,200 pound
chicken shipment spoiled for lack of refrigeration.
Reyneri, who has worked in the field for 38 years, says that at the end of
December his shop received 4,200 pounds of frozen chicken destined to be
distributed under the governments food rationing plan. The shipment could
not be wholly distributed in the three hours between time of delivery and
closing time, so Reyneri covered the remainder with ice, since his shop does not
have refrigeration equipment.
The next day, employees discovered that at least some of the chicken was
spoiled, so the remainder of the shipment was confiscated.
A directive of the Ministry of Internal Commerce stipulates that in cases
like this, the manager of the facility has to procure the means to transport the
food to a facility that has refrigeration and to pick it up the next day. The
manager also has to secure the financing for this operation, because the
distributing entity has neither the financing nor the transportation to do it.
