PINAR DEL RIO, January 1 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - The city of Pinar del Río received the new year with
fetid sewer water ditches, smelly dumpsters full of trash, street piles of
waste, graves ending at the public thoroughfare, stray dogs everywhere, ruined
streets, and public places and sidewalks in the dark, through where thousands of
citizens pass at all hours loading buckets of water.
Year after year people have the same demands, and the only thing that
changes is the new problems that are added on the top of the old ones.
Sixty years ago, in 1941, Doctor Tebelio Rodríguez del Haya and a
team of 16 professionals formed the committee "Everything for Pinar del Río",
in order to clean the city. After six decades, and into more then 40 years of
socialism, the same streets that Doctor del Haya cleaned are filthy again and
the lack of hygiene spreads, filling the city with mosquitoes and pestilence.
At that time the committee centered its efforts on marginal areas. Today
they would have had to extend well beyond, reaching the best residential zones
in the city.
