Pietersburg - The Cuban government has set its sights on developing rural
Northern Province and has already donated equipment to five poor schools,
African Eye News Service reports.
Freddy Greaver, spokesperson for education MEC Joyce Mashamba, said a Cuban
delegation led by the island's Ambassador to South Africa, Marcos
Rodriguez-Costa, visited the region on Friday.
"They visited us as part of Cuban President Fidel Castro's directive to
study our province and the state of our schools and education in general,"
he said.
As a token of goodwill, the delegates donated five solar panels to generate
electricity at five rural schools.
"They also donated five television sets and video recorders, as well as
batteries," said Greaver.
People will be trained to operate the equipment.
Greaver said the quality of education in Cuba was excellent and that the
country was keen to help South Africa improve its education standards,
particularly in rural areas.
