HAVANA, January 24 (María de los Angeles González Amaro,
UPECI) The Vitral paint factory located in the Havana municipality of
Boyeros was ransacked by thiefs last week for the second time in six months.
Losses are calculated to be in the thousands of dollars; no official figures
have been released.
The first theft occured on July 10, 2000. On both occasions thieves took raw
materials used in the manufacture of paint and empty containers. Presumably the
bulk of the materials taken could only be carried by truck. In both instances
there was no indication of broken doors or windows or other evidence of forced
entry.
Police had set up surveilance of the factory after the first theft. Now they
have two dossiers to contend with.
Some familiar with the factory suggest that all the evidence points to slow,
sustained pilferage of the materials in question that the administration for
reasons of its own chose to report as a sudden theft.
There are rumors of the existence of clandestine paint factories that
compete with their government-owned counterparts and that in some cases turn out
a better product.
