Taxi drivers have to donate some of their tips to the state

HAVANA, January 23 (María de los Angeles González Amaro, UPECI) - The drivers of government taxis authorized to pick up passengers at Havana's airport are compelled to hand in to authorities some of the tips they receive from arriving tourists.

In addition, the drivers have been contributing two dollars of their tips to the maintenance and office workers at their base, to ensure their cooperation. The drivers of the PanaTaxis fleet get paid 27 pesos for every 100 dollars they take in, or approximately every three days. The current exchage rate is 21 pesos for a dollar.

The drivers of the government-owned taxis also face competition from private operators, even though the latter are not allowed to work out of the airport, charge in dollars of transport tourists. Still, savvy travelers know that they can get a much better deal from the private operators.
