CIENFUEGOS, January 10 (Dr. Sunset Nogueras Rofes) Mexican national
Jorge Alejandro Muñiz cut a wide swath through the southern port city of
Cienfuegos before he was arrested and deported recently.
Muñiz registered for a post-graduate course in general surgery after
presenting credentials acrediting him as a graduate of the Universidad Autónoma
de México. The only problem was that the credentials turned out to be
bogus; Muñiz, who later described himself as a businessman, confessed to
having acquired the false diploma in México. Nevertheless, Muñiz
sat through the four-month course at the "Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía
Lima" hospital between September and December, 2000.
The false doctor "managed to perform surgical practices without
significant accomplishments," according to doctors and nurses who evaluated
him during the course.
One secretary at the Medical school in Cienfuegos, which offers
post-graduate courses to foreigners, was sanctioned over the incident. She
denied having any responsibility in the affair.
Muñiz apparently also conned the owners of the houses in which he
lodged, and that proved to be his undoing. At his last address, he told the
owner, who only would identify herself as Carmen, that 1,475 dollars were
missing from his belongings. The woman notified police and in the ensuing
investigation, Muñiz was unmasked, arrested and deported.
