PINAR DEL RIO, December 18 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI)
Diseases aided by poor sanitation are on the increase in the westernmost Cuban
municipality of Sandino.
For example, cases of hepatitis A are up 34 percent from last year, diarrhea
is up 30 percent, and amoebic dysentery has increased 67 percent. In addition,
cases of leptospirosis have been reported, whereas last year there were none.
The director of municipal sanitation, Sergio González Pilar, said
that there is a growing presence of mice and rats, cockroaches, flies and
mosquitoes due to the deteriorating sanitary conditions in the area.
Municipal authorities say they do not have the resources to repair two
vehicles that are used in sanitation activities in the area.
