Fewer buses in service as transport director travels to Brazil

HAVANA, December 17 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) – Neighbors and employees of the bus depot in the Santa Amalia district here were puzzled by news that the depot director was traveling to Brazil "on business" as the number of buses in service dwindles daily.

The director, Ángel Marrero, left for Brazil on December 8. On that day, there were 28 buses out of service, up from 19 three days before out of the total of 40 assigned to the Santa Amalia depot. Two buses were idle for lack of a windshield, two were in need of brake parts and the rest needed tires, oil or fuel.

The neighbors wondered why the authorities would spend scarce foreign currency on the trip instead of using it to solving the crisis.
