HAVANA, December 11 (María de los Angeles González, UPECI)
Four representatives of the armed forces met last week with the managers of the
dollar stores in the Havana municipality of 10 de Octubre and accused them of
corruption and of not meeting sales objectives for the year 2000.
The sales objective for the dollar stores for 2000 was approximately 100
million dollars. A substantial percentage of that goes to the armed forces, who
are the principal operators of the dollar stores.
Lázaro González, the manager of "Sylvain," one of
the stores in the dollar net, said that his store and "Rumbo," faced
serious deficiencies in meeting their objectives. By 2 in the afternoon on
November 27th, "Rumbo" had not yet made its first sale for the day
after being open for six hours.
Maritza Reyes Gómez, 42, who works at one of the dollar stores, said
that an investigation by the new district manager for these stores in the 10 de
Octubre municipality showed that the losses the stores have been reporting are
exagerated and in some cases imaginary.
Reyes is afraid shell be fired because she is privy to the shenanigans
of the manager of the store where she works. "This is not going to go away
until he fires me, because I know all the ins and outs, and all the fraudulent
connections among the stores in the area."
