HAVANA, December 11 (Ricardo González Alfonso) Cuban
dissidents commemorated Human Rights Day, December 10, in more than 15 locations
around the country while the political police arrested more than 100 of them.
"More than a hundred were arrested in 72 hours, an unprecedented number
in such a short time span," said Elizardo Sánchez Santa Cruz, the
president of the Cuban Commission of Human Rights and National Reconciliation.
Dissident groups organized marches, fasts, conferences, and workshops,
handed out copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and wore black
clothing as a symbol of their demands of freedom for political prisoners.
At least 35 dissident groups organized pacificist demonstrations in Havana,
as well as in most of the other 13 provinces. A disproportionate number of
arrests were reported in westernmost Pinar del Río province. Most of
those arrested have been released.
The protests commemorated the anniversary of the United Nations Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.
