PINAR DEL RIO, December 7 (Lázaro Raúl González, CPI)
Police and civilians formed a posse and marched out of the small town of
Herradura in this province for several nights at the end of November as part of
a determined effort against cattle rustling and illegal cattle slaughter.
The net result so far is that farmers Leonel and Humberto Morera were fined
50 and 80 pesos respectively, for keeping "unprotected" animals; that
is, tied beyond the immediate perimeter of their house and near the highway.
Humbertos fine was 30 pesos higher because, according to the neighbors, "he
protested."
The law-and-order commando was composed of the best of Herradura society:
several police agents, the president of the Popular Power (local government),
the delegate of the ministry of Agriculture, a livestock inspector, and other
local notables.
On one of the nights they patrolled, a bullock was stolen and slaughtered
about 12 feet from the very highway the combined forces took. The crime was
uncovered the next morning with the cooperation of several helpful buzzards. So
far, as they say, no arrests have been made.
