AREQUIPA, Peru – The Tourism Development Commission of St. Petersburg in Russia proposed to Cuban officials the possibility of launching direct charter flights between Cuban airports and their local airport, Pulkovo.
Nana Gvichiya, Vice President of the Commission, told the Russian media outlet Tourbus that for St. Petersburg, Latin American countries, particularly Cuba, are important trading partners.
“St. Petersburg always welcomes tourists from these countries with special hospitality and strives to make their stay in the city as comfortable as possible,” she said.
The Island is the only country in Latin America where Russia has direct regular flights, launched on July 1, 2023.
“We would like to see more flights of this type on both sides. I hope today’s meeting serves as another step in the development of mutually beneficial relations and leads to the achievement of our goals,” Gvichiya pointed out.
According to the report, the business meeting was part of a gathering in Moscow with representatives from Latin American countries on the topic of sustainable tourism. During the meeting, the guests made presentations about the tourism potential of each nation.
St. Petersburg and Cuba have had established ties for a long time, the vice president stated, even in the field of tourism. This year, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the relationship between this Russian city and Santiago de Cuba, St. Petersburg’s Day will be celebrated in the island.
Meanwhile, Olga Kaya, project manager at Pulkovo Airport, confirmed that there is an interest in the development of air traffic and an increase in tourism between Russia and Cuba.
However, to increase the number of flights between both territories, airlines support is required, due to the long and costly journeys, as well as the possibility of receiving aircraft with dual registration, Kaya indicated.
The parties agreed to continue negotiations on the introduction of direct charter flights, the report stated.
