MÉRIDA, Mexico -. The Cuban government seeks to attract new tourism markets to fill its hotels, which explains the extensive coverage given in its official media to the island’s presence at the India Tourism Fair.
A note from the Cuban foreign ministry reported last Friday on the island’s stand at the largest fair of its kind in the Asia region, which took place from February 8 to 10 in the city of Mumbai.
The Cuban regime paid for a 164-square-feet stand at the fair with the objective of “promoting Cuba as a destination in the Indian market.”
Likewise, Elizabeth Cristina Vela, Tourism Advisor for the Asia-Pacific region; Abel Aballe Despaigne, Chargé d’Affaires of the Cuban Embassy in India, and representatives from the Cuban travel agencies Havanatur and Cubatur traveled to the fair.
The Cuban delegation sought to boost the Única campaign, which consists of “establishing alliances with Indian tour operators, advertising agencies, and airlines for the promotion and commercialization of Cuba as a destination.”
The representatives of the Cuban government also tried to “stimulate the presence of Indian companies” at the upcoming FitCuba 2024 fair, which will be held in May.
Furthermore, they will attempt to attract Indian investors who are willing to follow in the footsteps of the MGM Muthu group from that country, which currently manages several hotels in Cuba, concludes the note from the Cuban foreign ministry.
For its part, a report from Cubadebate celebrated that the Cuban delegation to the India Tourism Fair received the Award for the Most Promising New Destination at the conclusion of the event.
India is the most populous nation in the world and one of the emerging markets for outbound tourism.
In 2022, Cuban authorities presented the island as a tourist destination during the First Annual Outbound Tourism Summit, which took place in New Delhi, the capital of India. During the meeting, organized by the FICCI Chamber of Commerce of that city, the Cuban ambassador to India, Alejandro Simancas Marín, highlighted “the country’s attractions as a tourist destination.”
