Cuban political prisoner offers to trade
sentences with Martha Beatriz Roque
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, May 10 ( (Emilio Rodríguez,
Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org)
- A political prisoner serving a sentence
of six years and 10 months has offered to
assume the sentence of ailing dissident
Martha Beatriz Roque if it could lead to
an earlier release for her.
Guillermo Fariñas Hernández
made the offer in a letter to President
Fidel Castro dated May 4. "The object
of this letter is to declare my willingness
to be exchanged for Martha Beatriz Roque
Cabello, who has been condemned by the regime
to 20 years imprisonment and who is actually
hospitalized in the prison ward of the Dr.
Carlos J. Finlay Military Hospital,"
Fariñas Hernández wrote.
Roque, 58, was the only female among 75
dissidents sentenced last April to long
prison terms.
Her niece, María de los Angeles
Falcón Cabello, said after a visit
that her aunt was refusing to take any medicine
prescribed by doctors nor to let them examine
her and that she will not eat any meals
prepared in the hospital.
