Politically unreliable basketball coach
fired in Cuba
HAVANA, Cuba, December 3 (Reinaldo Cosano
Alén www.cubanet.org) - Sports authorities
in Holguín province fired basketball
coach Eliécer Consuegra after they
found him politically unreliable this past
May.
Consuegra said he refused to participate
in political meetings and other activities
of a similar nature, and to boot, he founded
an independent library in Antilla municipality
in March.
Independent libraries are an initiative
of the emerging civil society movement within
the island. Consuegra said opening the library
earned him a brief detention by the Department
of State Security.
Most recently, he said, sports authorities
would report him as absent without justification
when he didn't attend political activities,
and dock his salary accordingly. Finally,
he said, the assistant director of the sports
center where he worked, Yosbani Manzanet,
told him he was permanently fired for his
"poor political attitude." Manzanet
told him he couldn't continue working with
the students because of his ideas contrary
to the government.
