PINAR DEL RIO, March 19 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Public Health Ministry officials in Pinar del Río
province are harassing Dr. Hanoi Hernández, the man in charge of an
independent medical office in Guane, and people here say it's because the
doctor's modest effort works better than the government's facilities.
March 16, a ministry official attempted to get Hernández to sign a
document which, among other things, stated that local residents were opposed to
the establishment.
Hernández refused to sign and instead invited the official and her
superiors to visit the medical office to see for themselves the kind of service
that's rendered. Hernández operates the facility with aid sent to him
from abroad.
Previously, a provocateur had said Hernández charged for his
services, something that is forbidden in Cuba, but residents of Guane came out
to say the doctor renders free services to those that need them.
