PINAR DEL RIO, March 14 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Fewer than 100,000 acres will be planted in rice in the Los
Palacios area this year. This represents about a third of the total area
available.
The winter rice harvest, just concluded, used under 20,000 acres, compared
to close to 27,000 planted in the 1980s. The yield per acre is also down by
almost a hundredweight per acre.
Agricultural engineer Miguel Arcángel Camejo said, "The Los
Palacios rice growing region used to plant more than 50,000 acres in the spring;
this year only 9,000 acres are being planted." Mr. Camejo commented that
the area used to be considered "the bread basket of western Cuba."
