Veterinary tech fired for dabbling in human rights

CAMAGÜEY, March 12 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - A veterinary technician in the Isle of Youth was fired from his job yesterday for associating with human rights activists.

Lázaro Pérez García, who worked for the Veterinary Medicine Institute in a screwworm erradication project, says he was fired for political motives.

"More than a week ago they had told me I would lose my job. Yesterday, the Communist Party secretary, the Communist Youth secretary, the labor union secretary, the project director, and four other workers called me in and told me that on account of my political stance and my links with human rights activists, I couldn't continue working there," said Pérez.

The screwworm erradication project Pérez was working on is sponsored by the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency. It consists of irradiating screwworm flies with Cesium-137 to make them sterile and releasing them to mate with wild flies.
