CAMAGÜEY, March 5 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) -
A large gathering of human rights activists that some eyewitnesses estimated at
upwards of 3,000 clashed with police shortly after noon yesterday in Ciego de Ávila,
as they protested the beating of one of their own an hour earlier.
Approximately 50 police, State Security agents, and members of the
paramilitary Rapid Response Brigades beat the protesters and arrested an
indeterminate number of them. Among those reported to have been arrested were
several activists of the Cuban Foundation for Human Rights and independent
journalists.
Events unfolded in front of the "Antonio Luaces Iraola" hospital,
as protesters gathered in support of independent journalist Jesús Álvarez
Castillo, who was being treated after he was beat by police at 11:30 that
morning.
Those arrested are reportedly being held at the polices Technical
Investigations Department headquarters, but police have not released any
official statements.
