HAVANA, January 28 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - U.
S. TV stations are sometimes received in Cuba, and they are preferred to the
local broadcasts, according to sources in Havana.
A telecommunications specialist explained that reception is possible this
time of year "because the atmosphere offers less resistance to U. S.
broadcasts."
Cuban viewers say they are impressed by the quality and variety of the
foreign broadcasts. Another aspect that appeals to Cubans is the multitude of
ads for automobiles, cosmetics, medicines and other consumer goods that in the
island are only available to officials.
"Channel 23, Univision, made me sleepless last night," said one
resident of Diez de Octubre municipality, who said he found the programming
impressive.
The U. S. broadcasts are received here in spite of the governments
electronic interference and its ban against UHF antennas.
Many residents prefer to watch the U. S. channels to the continuing "battle
of ideas" broadcast over all Cuban media.
