CIEGO DE ÁVILA, January 9 (Léster Téllez Castro, APLA /
www.cubanet.org) Hundreds of flyers bearing anti-Castro slogans were spread
last night in several areas of Ciego de Ávila, the capital city of the
province of the same name in central Cuba.
Residents were atwitter this morning about the papers, which all read "Down
with Fidel." This expression has sent many Cubans to jail for years, since
it is characterized as enemy propaganda in the Cuban penal code.
The flyers were spread all over the city, although they were more
concentrated in Vista Alegre and in the center of the city.
So far, no one has taken responsibility for the flyers. Evidently, whoever
it was took advantage of an extensive blackout that lasted until approximately
11 p.m. Afterwards, Interior Ministry officers fanned out through the city,
stopping passersby and asking for identification.
Dissident leader Juan Carlos González said that last week similar
incidents occurred in Florida and Céspedes, in neighboring Camagüey
province.
