HAVANA, February 12 (Lucas Garve, CPI / www.cubanet.org) - Approximately 40
members of the 17 families living at 311 Galiano Street have been waiting for
more than 30 years for the building to be repaired. Now the structure is
apparently in danger of imminent collapse due to lack of maintenance.
As far back as 1968, the tenants received a document qualifying them for
relocation to other housing, due to the condition of the building. In 1998, an
engineering study classified the building as "uninhabitable, but
repairable." At that time, the tenants say they committed to help the
reconstruction brigades with the work, but they never showed up.
More recently, the Department of Architecture and Urban Affairs reclassified
the structure as "uninhabitable, not repairable."
In the meantime, the tenants still live in the century-old building, which
has suffered several partial collapses in recent years.
