HAVANA, April 23 (Luis Viño Zímerman) - Merchandise sold in
government-operated stores is not guaranteed.
A woman who only gave her first name, Norma, bought a gas range in the La
Joya store, in Guanabacoa, for 540 pesos. When the range was installed, a
leak was detected, so she asked for a replacement, and was told by the stores
administrator that it was not possible, because the range did not have a
guarantee. Then she asked for her money back, and was told that an order from
the Ministry of Internal Commerce forbid returning customers money.
Julio Sosa bought a fan, for which he paid 493 pesos, at the El Güije
store. After trying it out in the store, he took it home. Two hours later, the
fan quit, and Sosa returned to the store where he found out what Norma already
knew. No exchange, no refund.
Norma, Sosa, and others like them have to find, and pay, their own way to
repairing their new wares.
