PINAR DEL RIO, April 23 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Two men,
presumably hospital officials who never identified themselves, denied Dr. Sergio
Ruiz Rivas access to the medical charts of two women whose long labor left a
permanent imprint on their babies.
Dr. Ruiz said several independent physicians have been investigating a
number of cases in Guane municipality, all concerning retarded and epileptic
babies resulting from lack of oxygen during long labors.
Dr. Ruiz said early on April 16 he went to the medical records room of the
Abel Santamaría maternity hospital in Pinar del Río. "As I
was talking to an employee, two men asked me what I was doing there. They asked
me to identify myself, and then took me before the maternity director, where
they accused me of trying to take the charts. I denied that, because my
intention was to obtain a summary, which is not illegal. The one who seemed to
be the chief said that to obtain any data there one had to be authorized by the
maternity director, which she accepted meekly. They then returned my
identification and called the matter closed."
Later Dr. Ruiz was told the medical charts he sought were not at the
hospital and that no one knew where they were.
