SANTIAGO DE CUBA, April 19 (Juan Carlos Cárdenas, APLO /
www.cubanet.org) The cases of strong-arm robbery have increased significantly
in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba province, according to reliable sources.
In just one night, April 13, there were seven cases reported; five by women
and two elderly men, one of them a German tourist.
Reportedly, the tourist was held up in the bathroom at a night club by
several men who threatened him with knives.
One of the women, Elena Dagneses, suffered cuts to the neck when one of her
assailants grabbed a chain she was wearing. She also suffered a cut on her arm
that took 14 stitches to close. She was assaulted about 50 feet from her home.
One of the victims, after filing a report at the police station, said the
best the officers could do was complain they have only two cars to patrol the
city.
"Many residents don't feel secure when they walk the streets,"
said one source.
