Blind human rights activist ill treated and imprisoned in Cuba

Pax Christi. The Netherlands. April 9, 2002.

Pax Christi Netherlands asks for International Support for his Immediate Release

Pax Christi Netherlands is very concerned about the imprisoned blind Cuban human rights activist, lawyer and president of the Human Rights Foundation in Cuba, JUAN CARLOS GONZALEZ LEIVA. He is accused of "public disorder" and incarcerated at the State Security Prison in Holguin, Cuba. He denies any food and liquid in protest fo the accusations against him of committing common crimes.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez Leiva is not the only activist imprisoned in Cuba. People working in the field of law, human rights, journalism, and medicine are especially vulnerable to state oppression in Cuba. Of the same Human Rights Foundation four more members are currently imprisoned: Delio Laureano Resquejo, Lazaro Iglesias, Virgilio Mantilla, Jose Carlos Morgado.

Pax Christi Netherlands calls for the international attention to the ongoing violations of human rights in Cuba. International pressure on the Cuban government is urgently needed to protect all those Cubans whose lives are seriously threatened, only because they honour the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that the state of Cuba once signed.
