– On March 30th, the 28 years old political prisoner Ernesto Lucas Corral
Cabrera, who is serving a 6 year sentence under cause no. 209/97 for illegal
exiting of national territory, was victim of a brutal beating at the hands of
Captain Víctor Reyes Cobas, who savagely hit the prisoner on both legs
with an iron bar, leaving him unconscious in a pool of blood in a punishment
cell in section TO-500 at the prison of Combinado de Guantanamo .
This information was written and subscribed in a note by the political
prisoners Juan Carlos Fonseca and Luis Mariano Delis Utria, and given to
relatives who surreptitiously took it out of prison. Both men are serving long
sentences for illegal exiting national of territory.
The prisoners further stated in their note : "We thought that captain
Cobas had killed Ernesto, we could hear from the distance his bones cracking
with each blow, then he was left there like a rag doll in that pool of blood".
"How much longer! … all we could do from a distance was to stay
awake, watching over him and praying for God to give him strength to survive
this damned place"- finished saying the note.
According to the laws in effect and other regulations in the country, the
National Direction of Jails and Prisons of the Department of the Interior (whose
main offices are in 15 and K, Vedado in the City of Havana) is in charge of the
physical and mental integrity of all the prisoners in Cuban penitentiaries.
