Castro is reportedly so concerned about U.S. response, he is putting his
military on high alert. In a speech this weekend, the 75-year-old Fidel Castro
made the U.S. and President Bush his target.
Castro told a cheering crowd that Pres. Bush wants "a world military
dictatorship under the exclusive rule of force, irrespective of any
international laws or institutions. There would be only one boss, only one
judge, and only one law.''
Castro said the U.S. government was led by "extremists" and "hawks"
who were interested in starting a global war which would lead to an "infinite
killing of innocent people."
"Their capacity to destroy and kill is enormous, but their traits of
equanimity, serenity, reflection and caution are, on the other hand, minimal,"
Castro said.
CubaNet, a forum for independent journalists in Cuba, said that Castro has
mobilizied his countrys military in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
José Antonio Fornaris reports this week that "After last week's
terrorist attacks against targets in the United States, no active duty military
personnel have been seen on the streets of Havana. Apparently they have been
called to report to their units.
He reports that the government-controlled news media has emphasized that "the
winds of war are blowing in Washington" and that "the United States
wants to drag humanity into a confrontation."
Independent journalist Juan Carlos Linares said a military source told him
that the system of national defense was activated immediately after the attacks
on New York and Washington.
Also, Linares said, someone in a leadership position in the Committees for
the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) said that the evacuation plans for minors,
the handicapped and the elderly had been activated. The CDRs are in charge of,
among other things, civil defense. |
