HAVANA, September 13 (Luis Viño Zimerman, UPECI / CubaNet) - Havana
residents are beginning to question the government's sincerity in taking away a
pound of sugar from the ration book, promising to substitute it with a
half-pound of cooking oil.
"The pound of sugar has already been taken off the ration book for the
month, but here it is already the 13th of the month and they haven't even
announced when they are going to distribute the half-pound of oil,"
complained a housewife here.
According to Granma, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, the
measure came about as a result of studies which showed that the average Cuban's
diet was low on fats and high on sugars.
Knowledgeable sources say, however, that the government has not begun
distributing the oil because it simply does not have enough on hand. "The
real cause for taking away a pound of sugar from the allotted ration," they
add, "is that the last sugar harvest was such a disaster that there isn't
even enough sugar to fulfill the commitments the government had."
