CAMAGÜEY, September 5 (Homero Pacheco Ordóñez, CPIC /
CubaNet ) - The attention offered patients at the Camagüey Maternity
Hospital differs considerably from the image of a "medical power" the
government seeks to foster about the Cuban health care system.
"The patients' diet is not the one called for, the food itself is
poorly cooked, and it consists of beans, rice, and plantains," said one
hospital employee who wouldn't give her name. The woman added that patients'
relatives bring in food to supplement the rations that patients get.
There are also reports of a scarcity of bed linens and a shortage of running
water.
"That's why patients are frequently sent home before it's prudent to do
so and why the number of beds is not enough for the area's population,"
said the employee.
