HAVANA, September 4 (Juan Carlos Linares / CubaNet) - A special audit by the
Ministry of Tourism exposed the embezzlement of nearly 7,000 dollars by
officials at the Villa Tortuga Gret resort in Varadero Beach, Matanzas province.
The source of the information, who asked to remain anonymous, said the results
of the audit were inscribed in Act 169/2001 of the Ministry's control
department.
No information was immediately available as to who the implicated officials
were or what the consequences of the investigation might be.
The informant said the method most often used by embezzlers at government
facilities is to overcharge tourists for lodging and other products.
One resident, upon learning of the investigation, said: "This is only
what you can see; the extent of existing corruption in tourist operations is
incalculable."
