HAVANA, October 23 (Juan Carlos Linares / CubaNet) - The ideological
campaign against the United States intensified by the Cuban government after the
terrorist attacks of September 11 is provoking anti-American feeling in
segments of the population.
People in the streets can be heard saying such things as "The Americans
deserve what is happening to them," or "They were attacked because
they have done a lot of harm." Yet, some of the same people also say they
would love to migrate to the United States because there they would live better
and have opportunities to advance.
The directors of the nightly, ideologically-oriented, televised programs
called "round tables" practically justify the actions of Osama bin
Laden and the Taliban.
"Havana residents, as well as any other Cuban, don't have time to think
because they have to spend all their time trying to obtain food, and the only
information they receive is from the national media, all government-controlled,
so it's not unusual that people in the street would repeat what they hear from
the Communist Party spokesmen on television," said one resident.
