CIEGO DE AVILA, October 19 (Juan Carlos González Leiva, FCDH /
CubaNet) - Three officers of the Watch and Protection Corps who were arrested in
connection with the theft of 5,000 liters of gasoline say their supervisors did
it.
Roberto Camacho, Enrique Gil and Ociel Cantillo were detained for several
days at the police station in Orlando González township, Ciego de Ávila
province. They are now free awaiting trial.
Police say the three extracted the fuel with hoses. "However, Camacho,
Gil, and Cantillo say they are innocent, that the thieves are their supervisors,
who dedicate their working hours to taking anything they can get their hands on,
instead of to their duties," said Rubén Cabrera Esquijarosa, an
activist with the Cuban Foundation for Human Rights.
The theft of gasoline to be sold in the black market is very lucrative in
Cuba.
