HAVANA, October 16 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad / CubaNet) -
Hundreds of pairs of shoes donated to Cuba as far back as 2000 rotted due to
official neglect in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province, in south central
Cuba. In the lot there were men's, women's and children's shoes.
"The donation was given to the Local Industries Association, which
started selling them at a dollar a pair, but when a mob assembled to buy them,
they were withdrawn from sale and stored," said Ramón Guillermo
Medina, a Cuba-Verdad reporter in the area.
The shoes remained in a warehouse for over a year. In July of this year,
part of the lot was taken to nearby Cruces. In August, workers were assigned to
classify the shoes. It was these workers who reported the shoes had rotted.
In Cuba, shoes can only be found in the dollar market, at prices that can
amount to several months' salary for the average worker.
