Nelspruit, Oct 16, 2001 (African Eye News Service/All Africa Global Media
via COMTEX) -- The Mpumalanga health department is inviting matriculants who
want to study medicine in Cuba next year to apply for bursaries.
The invitation follows a two-year lapse in the bursary scheme following
budget constraints in 2000 and 2001.
"We managed to send 22 students to Cuba in 1997 and 1998 but couldn't
send any in 2000 and 2001 because we were facing budget constraints," said
departmental spokesperson Dumisani Mlangeni on Tuesday.
He said ten students would be sent to Cuba in September 2002 at a cost of
$30 000 per student.
"Preference will be given to students who have qualified with an
average of 60% in mathematics, biology and physical science," Mlangeni
said.
Certified copies of identity documents and matriculation certification
should accompany the applications that close on December 31 this year. - African
