Many Cuban doctors abroad don't want to return

HAVANA, October 8 (Juan Carlos Linares / CubaNet) - The Cuban government has instructed its diplomatic personnel to persuade Cuban health care professionals to return to Cuba after serving abroad, said one such who would only allow himself to be identified as "a doctor who served in Africa."

"More than 130 doctors have expressed their intentions of remaining in Botswana, Nigeria, South Africa and elsewhere," said the doctor. Many, he added, have married locals to be able to remain and not have to return to Cuba.

"I know doctors serving in Africa who doubt the good will of the Cuban government. They ask how is it possible that they will be accepted without problems when others who have quit their medical service stints abroad are not allowed back," he said.

Doctors and others willing to serve abroad do so in order to earn some dollars and to be able to get out of Cuba, at least for a while, the doctor said.
