Attacks aimed at independent journalist

HAVANA, October 8 (UPECI) - An undetermined number of people launched a concerted attack against the homes of independent journalist Víctor Rolando Arroyo and his mother at approximately 2:00 a.m. October 6 in Pinar del Río, Cuba.

The attackers threw bottles at the homes, causing unspecified damages. The next day, flyers were spread around the vicinity, which read: "Citizens, neighbors, beware of this traitor and whistle-blower, Víctor Rolando Arroyo, your neighbor. Very soon our movement of justice and liberation will make him pay dearly for the damage he has caused."

Arroyo and his family called police, who showed up to investigate 14 hours after the attacks.

"In Cuba, only those who feel protected, who are assured that their actions will not have consequences for them, can carry out this type of attack," said Arroyo.
