(VILLA CLARA, CUBA, November 21, 2001) - While authorities increase
repression against the penal population in the prison of Canaleta, in Ciego de
Avila, disease caused by malnutrition and inhumane living conditions also rises.
Freddy, in charge of the penitentiary center; Ricardo, in charge of
re-education; Eugenio, second in command of re-education; Gamboa and Laudino, in
charge of the firing squad; Tejeda, educator of Ward 10; Pepe, in charge of
discipline; make up the high ranking officials of this torture center under
Castro.
At nighttime, screams and lamentations can be heard coming from prisoners
whose tortured bodies lay in solitary confinement cells. Amak has been in
solitary confinement for several months now, he is missing one hand and the
other is handicapped. Prison authorities have subjected him to the most
cruelest tortures; they have tied him half-way standing up, nude, to a chair,
with his legs crossed and tied to the sides of the chair, with his arms tied to
the bars of the cell. He has been there in that same position for several days
now, the excrement piles up on the chair, and flies are all over his body.
Due to the position he is in, he has not been able to sleep for several
nights. He complains and screams: down with Freddy, down with Ricardo, Pepe,
down with Laudino, Gamboa, down with Tejeda, down with the dictatorship, long
live Human Rights.
In addition, the nutrition provided by this prison consists of banana water,
boiled flour dough, rice, a boiled banana depending on allocation. All of this
is without fat or spices. As spice, they use garlic leaves.
Every thinkable body waste filters through these cells. Urine flows
through, everywhere on the floor and humidity causes serious respiratory
problems.
In order to receive medical attention the guard patrolling the hallways has
to consult vial Walkie Talkie with the guard in the post at the entrance of the
prison. This guard decides whether prisoners are seen by the doctors or not, if
the prisoner complains, the response given to his ailment is to take him to a
cell in handcuffs, at the whim of this guard on duty.
I just don't know. This is the country where the leaders do not abuse the
people. Where human beings are of utmost importance. This is the reflection
of the purity of the revolution.
