Informativo Cuba Miami, November 23, 2001.
(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 15, 2001) On the morning of
November 13th, a small group of human rights activists of this city, gathered at
the surgery Ward 4-A of the Provincial Hospital of Guantánamo. The group
was made up Luis Torres Cardosa, Alberto Martínez Fernández, and
Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, whom went there to inquire as to the health of
the recently freed political prisoner Yonny Lobañino, whom lost his leg
in the mined fields surrounding the frontier (which divides the US Naval Base
and Guantánamo) and was sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in prison.
More than one year ago, Yonny swallowed a wire in protest for the repression
by penitentiary authorities. He was denied medical attention for this incident.
He was hospitalized several days ago in the hopes of having the wire surgically
removed, an operation which has been postponed in spite of the fact that this 24
year old man is throwing up blood.
The surgeon in charge of the operation stated that the wait is due to the
daily growing numbers of patients with different types of cancer, which require
surgery and have priority. This situation is cause for alarm at the public
health delpartment of this province. The most common types of cancer being
prostate, breast, ovarian and lung.
Labañino was informed that the waiting period for his surgery was
approximately an additional 15 days.
Reported , Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, Delegate in Guantánamo
of the "Partido Democrático 30 de Noviembre "Frank País".
