HAVANA, November (www.cubanet.org) The Cuban government has launched a
public relations campaign to promote savings in electrical consumption as a
result of the damages caused by hurricane Michelle.
The hurricane knocked down an unknown number of electrical transmission
towers and lines in the center of the island, disconnecting the eastern and
western halves of the grid.
Aspects of the savings campaign include shifting loads to off-peak hours,
turning off air conditioners and electric ranges at all times, and other
high-power consumers, such as refrigerating and freezing equipment and water
pumping stations at peak hours of 6 to 10 p.m.
The Cuban capital accounts for one-third of the islands energy demand
during peak hours.
The extraordinary measures will be in effect until the damaged power grid is
repaired.
