Street-corner dump grows

HAVANA, October 30 (Juan Carlos Linares / CubaNet) - An improvised waste dump in a street corner in Luyanó, Havana, keeps growing as residents continue dumping their refuse faster than authorities can pick them up.

"Flies and mice wander around the pile at any time, day and night," complained one resident in the neighborhood.

The woman said before there used to be containers to collect the waste, but they deteriorated and were never replaced, so people started just dumping on the street corner.

The pile is such that it impedes both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.Another resident said that municipal employees used to go by every two days and pick up, but since there are no containers, they refuse to pick the debris off the pavement.

According to residents, the trash has not been picked up in a month.
